Valkyries Real-Time Painting: NEW Acrylic Technique discovered!

Here is the slightly sped up real-time Video of my Big Valkyrie Painting in three parts! 💗 Since It took me over 20 hours to paint I sped up the video by 200% so that I can show you most of the process! 💗  I also  filmed half of the process in the vertical format (since I unfortunately need to optimize my content for social media algorythms) so to watch it best use your phone! 😊 Since I painted this painting both with Acrylics and Oils I added a text on the top left corneer in each video to indicate which medium I am currently using! 😊

Materials & NEW TECHNIQUE : I mixed Acrylic Retarder with Winsor & Newton Flow Improver for Acrylics, without adding any water. This was really important because I wanted to achieve the smooth brush strokes you usually see with oil paints, but with acrylics. When I add water, the color tends to form small pearls that I don’t want and which ruins my brushstrokes. So, I was looking for a consistency similar to oil paint and decided to try mixing these two mediums together. It worked out really well! I just had to find a good balance, I tried to think about using the Flow Improver like water, whenever I needed my paint to be more fluid I used the flow improver and whenever I needed it to be a bit more jelly like or transparent I used Retarder. During my process I tend to always use a bit of retarder just to improve the consistency of the paint – but I also needed to be carfeul, when I used too much, the already not so opaque acrylic paint got even more transparent so I always tried to work sparingly with the retarder. With the flow improver however I didn’t need to be so careful because it’s so thin that it was very natural to work with it, it’s just like water but really helps creating beautiful brushstrokes. Also the brand didn’t make much of a difference either, both W&N’s flow improver and that from another brand (that I don’t remember right now) worked similarly well.

Regarding the use of both mediums: For example, when I was mixing a color, I would keep adding a bit of the Flow Improver, which is like water, and the Retarder, which has a jelly-like texture, until I was happy with the consistency. I didn’t do any complacted mixing beforehand, I just mixed everything on the fly!

This new technique turned out really effective, so much so that I am thinking of doing more smaller studies with oils and acrylics! 😊
