In this Alice in Wonderland tutorial, I’ll show you how to paint a graphic, Leyendecker-inspired portrait using watercolor, gouache, and colored pencils. The tutorial is split into two skill levels: first, a beginner-friendly watercolor section where you can finish a beautiful, loose portrait in about an hour (you can stop there and you’re done). Then, in the second part, I move into a more intermediate to advanced gouache stage, where I use an oil-painting-inspired method to push the values, sharpen the forms, and add a more polished, dimensional finish. You’ll also see my full mixed-media workflow for details like eyes, hair texture, and final refinements across the entire piece.
