This month’s Patreon video features my painting, “Love is a Battlefield”! This unnarrated real-time video will be a good example of how you can fix various mistakes in your artwork by using gouache and oil pastels. And it’s an important reminder of: Don’t ever use a shitty reference – EVER! 🤣😅

In this video, you’ll see me painting over the eyes and transforming them from half-closed to open, even after I had just completed them with my color pencil technique. You’ll also see me change the background multiple times using gouache and oil pastels!

Please note that this video is not a step-by-step guide – but rather an interesting case study of how you can save a painting that seems beyond repair! 😁

To see just how much the background and face needed fixing, I’ve included a few reference images below to see what I all changed in the final image. I also apparently decided on a whim to change the hair to purple (somehow I totally forgot that!)

I painted it on the Hahnemühle Collection 600 gm Hot Pressed Watercolor block. Even though everything seemed to go awry with this painting the paper held it all together! There is no warping whatsoever and the paper looked still beautifully soft and lush after all my abuse! 🙈😆
