I created this portrait study during my husband’s workshop in Vienna so I used the materials we provided for our students which were kindly sponsored by Rembrandt (Both Acrylic and Oil Paints) But as usual that doesn’t mean that you have to work with the exact same colors that I did. Especially when it comes to the acrylic paints that were part of a set you can work with different ones because the colors they chose for this set were somewhat unusual ( like Azo Yello, I never heard of that before!) But quality wise I like them as they are similar to Schmincke which I regularly work with.
In addition I worked with the one retarder and flow improver I could find in the Boesner Art Supply Store in Vienna which was from the brand Liquitex – the flow improver was fine but the retarder not! It got lumpy when mixed with both the flow improver and the Van Gogh Oil Paints. Terrible! Usually I work with W&N or Golden Flow Improver and Retarder which work well together and don’t create any lumps.
For the oil painting part I only used Liquin Original as a medium, usually I also work with Safflower Oil to clean my brushes, and I recommend using that or a brush cleaner to avoid the mess that I created when I painted this portrait! 😅
It took me about 5-6 hours to finish this portrait because I wasn’t used to the new retarder and the somewhat strong texture of my canvas. Therefore It took me much longer and I got frustrated. In the end I saved the portrait with oils. But the acrylic base was perfect as usual so that I was able to have a finished painting that I could show off at the end of the workshop 🤣 ….and could take home!
